St Marks Primary School, Worsley

Project Name:
St Marks Primary School, Worsley

PLCE have been proud and excited to be part of the delivery of St Marks Primary School based in Worsley, Manchester for and on behalf of Laing O’Rourke.
The project was a design and build specification for the expansion of an existing school which achieved by an innovative and first of its kind design utilising in situ modular “pod” classrooms which were purposefully fabricated to suite the client’s requirements.

The project provided its own demands which PLCE provided innovative solutions. Some of the issues PLCE faced on the project included the design and installation of a child-proof yet fun footpath around the building. The bespoke levels and areas were marked out by PLCE who worked closely with the school Head Teacher to achieve the school vision for this outdoor space.  This proved to be challenging yet innovative as the solution was devised to encompass the environmental aspects of the area within the design which will allow the children to interact with the greenery, nature
and trees where possible.

The lead time into the project commencement was only 1 week which provided its own challenge from procurement of materials to safety preparations and resulted in an “all hands on deck” culture with our personnel, operatives and the client. By working closely and long hours to ensure all was in place to mobilise and be onsite (Project teams, plant, materials etc) to commence the project relied
on one of the major key strengths of PL Civil Engineering. This being able to mobilise, deploy and react to the clients needs when lead times and project challenges may otherwise appear a problem.

Another demand of this project was the installation of a large scale water retention tank which again had a short lead time due to specification amendments by the architects to suit this ever changing project.  PLCE worked closely with the supplier in relation to the tank fabrication and the new bespoke trench measurements, which arose when the tank was installed. This was largely achieved and accredited to our highly experienced site management and operatives on the project. The end result was a successfully installed tank with almost no disruption to the surrounding environment.

The project also had delivery restrictions which the school had in place due to child and parent safety awareness, this too provided a challenge for PLCE and the client alike, however with transparent working conditions, communication and excellent relations with
the client we are delighted to state that the project was completed within the time
program and project budget.

St. Marks primary school extension was a truly bespoke package, being the first of its kind in this country and one which PL Civil Engineering enjoyed and are proud to add to our list of projects. As a growing company we pride ourselves with a can do attitude, an experienced team and project delivery for our clients as the main goal.
